In the past, the American Idol judges have always used their one save of the season by the time the show reaches the Top Five. But that’s not going to be the case this year.
Despite widespread expectation that any singer eliminated Thursday would be kept on the show so the competition would end on its scheduled week, country singer Janelle Arthur got the boot. And this despite getting a note of support from Dolly Parton, whose Dumb Blonde Arthur performed Wednesday.
Thursday’s show spelled trouble for both the country singers in the Top Five: Kree Harrison joined Arthur in the Bottom Two.
But fans of Idol‘s glory days had to have been pleased. Not only did Clay Aiken and Fantasia perform, but Jordin Sparks and LaToya London were in the audience. And the night’s biggest surprise? Paula Abdul returned for a brief appearance to show her support for Candice Glover, who performed Straight Up Wednesday.
Before briefly taking a seat at the judges’ table between Nicki Minaj and Mariah Carey, the original Idol judge proclaimed herself a big fan of Glover. “I’ve been watching this remarkable young lady captivate the audience week after week,” she said.
So the save’s still open. Guess the judges get to use it whenever they’re good and ready.
